Both my husband and I love our Salomon Speedcrosses for hiking AND BACKPACKING (My mother-in-law and father-in-law are also BIG FANS - have owned several pairs). After wearing a lightweight shoe it’s hard to go back to hiking boots.

Down jackets are a staple piece of gear. Down jackets have some of the best warmth to weight ratios, which is excellent for activities like backpacking. And this is one of the best-priced down jackets you can get for this age.

Down jackets can also be crucial in adding warmth to layering systems and especially for babies or toddlers who aren’t moving around as much in colder weather (i.e kids in child hiking carriers) or for cold days on the ski hill. I typically would layer a down jacket underneath an outerlayer on the ski hill.

I am surprised I don’t see this jacket getting more hype. This is a pretty amazing winter jacket that can be functional around town but also technical. It’s basically your waterproof puffy that features both down and synthetic fills mapped to the right parts of your body. Down where you need more warmth. synthetic where you don’t. This jacket is going to be warmer than even the REI Magma listed above but does weigh about a pound more than the Magma. Some feel this jacket isn’t warm enough for the category this jacket is in (bigger alpine winter expeditions). This jacket seems to be comfortable with only a light base layer in below-freezing temps and obviously can withstand colder temps with more / heavier layers underneath.

This minimalist shell is another great sale item. A minimalist shell is the middle ground between a rain jacket and hardshell. It’s more packable and lightweight than a hardshell but more technical than a standard rain jacket. Minimalist shells are especially popular with backpackers and climbers.

This is a great technical fleece for fall / winter hikes, ski tours, days at the resort or around town. I do think full-price this item is a little expensive. Its main competitor is the Arc’teryx Kyanite for $180. But when the REI fleece is on sale, I would highly recommend for its sale price!

An awesome-priced parka to keep you warm. This parka has a boxier fit than some prefer, but others love the shape. The boxy fit does allow for better mobility and room for layering.

Other similar parkas will run you at least $100 more around the $300 range.

This sun hoodie will go on sale again this spring if you want to focus on winter gear right now. I LOVE THIS SUN HOODIE from REI. I love the scoop shape on the bottom. I have found this sun shirt to be much more flattering than other sun shirts with boxy fits.

This sun hoodie is not an ultralight sun hoodie, but I can still use in temps in low 80 F.

If looking for an ultralight sun hoodie try the Outdoor Research Echo Sun Hoodie (lightest sun hoodie on the market, my husband and I both own these) or the Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake Sun Hoodie.

An awesome high quality ski kit for an awesome price!

This is another double sleeping pad option for backpacking. AND CURRENTLY A GREAT PRICE. While it isn’t my top recommendation for double sleeping pads it is a great value and insulated to keep you warm.

I also think this pad is durable enough to be used car camping and backpacking.

It’s also an oversized pad which some families prefer.

When it comes to waterproof, wet weather boots I am going to pick XTRATUF everytime! They aren’t insulated, but I just wear with a thicker sock in the winter. If you want the insulated verison see the boots below.

I would recommend sizing up!

This has been my favorite soft shell the past 6 years! It was designed with high output activities in mind. It’s my main jacket in the winter for ski touring, fat biking, winter hiking, xc skiing since it is breathable but mapped with fleece for some warmth.

This has been my go to backpacking pack, especially backpacking with kids or in the winter when I need more liter capacity.

The padding on this pad is amazing and handles big loads well.

My husband’s go to backpacking pack for the past 10 years.
